The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) came into effect on 1 January 2019, with some important updates and revisions.

  • Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs): These are now recommended for circuits supplying socket outlets in new residential installations (particularly in high-risk areas, such as bedrooms). AFDDs are designed to prevent fires caused by arcing faults.
  • Surge Protection: Surge protection devices (SPDs) have become mandatory for new installations in certain situations, including for electrical installations in locations where sensitive electronic equipment is present (such as data centres, hospitals, and some commercial buildings).
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging: The regulations now provide specific requirements for installing electric vehicle charging points. This includes ensuring that proper earthing and RCD protection is in place for such installations.
  • Enhanced Protection for Distribution Boards: Changes require that distribution boards in homes and other buildings must be able to accommodate increased power demands, particularly as we see more widespread adoption of electric vehicles and energy-efficient technologies.

Upgrade fuse boards to 18th edition regulation

Alot of homes in London and Most of the UK are still equipped with an old electrical fuse board. We would strongly advise that you upgrade your fuse board by a qualified electrician for a 17th edition regulation consumer unit. New regulation 401.1.201 will state that in domestic environments, fuse boards made from non-combustible and flammable material.
